Annelinn, on the left bank of the Emajõgi River, is the largest district in Tartu, and not just because of its 540 hectares – did you know that the largest number of Tartu residents live in the apartments and private houses of the district? Among the residential buildings, you’ll find both renovated original Soviet-era blocks of flats as well as brand new apartments and new developments, with the tall tower blocks balanced by numerous parks and walking paths, accompanied by the calmly flowing Emajõgi River.
It’s been said that Annelinn is like a hidden gateway to Tartu – for many people who move to Tartu, including young students, Annelinn is often their first stop.
Annelinn is a district of Tartu located on the left bank of the Emajõgi River. It’s the largest district in Tartu in terms of area – 540 ha. And although the area of Annelinn does not exceed the area of the next largest district, Ihaste (424 ha), by much, the number of inhabitants in Annelinn is considerably more than in other districts of Tartu.
The territory of Annelinn borders on: Paju street – Jaama street – city border – Nõlvaku street extension – Ihaste road – Emajõgi River. Although Annelinn also includes a small area of private houses around Männi and Kadaka streets, the overall impression is dominated by five- and nine-storey residential buildings with a rising relief designed in the shape of an amphitheatre.
As its residential buildings, mostly built in the 1980s, resemble thousands of other Soviet-era districts, Annelinn has the image of the dormitory suburb of Tartu. And while this is still partly true today, the last few decades have seen a lot of development: the original Soviet-era buildings have been renovated, and a number of new developments, beautiful blocks and new houses have been built.
Most of the apartment associations in Annelinn are relatively active – dealing with the essential issues that need to be addressed to keep the building running smoothly, with a lot of attention paid to tidying up the yards and courtyards (including parking, of course). Many people living in Annelinn are happy that the community is active and praise the positive atmosphere in their house - neighbourhood watches, people shaking hands and smiling, chatting when they meet in the courtyard. It’s been said that Annelinn is like a hidden gateway to Tartu – for many people who move to Tartu, including young students, Annelinn is often their first stop.
And not only students – there are also many families with children, as Annelinn is close to kindergartens, schools and hobby education. There are six basic and upper secondary schools in Annelinn, two of which teach Russian. After school, children can practice sports as well as music: Tartu Music School II and the newly renovated Annemõisa stadium and football hall are located in the district. There also the Anne Canal swimming beach and sports fields, and a well-maintained nature park on the Ihaste side. A great place to start your happy life in Tartu.
